Quadraphonic music technology, also known as four-channel sound or Quad, represents an innovative leap in audio reproduction that aimed to create a more immersive listening experience. Emerging prominently in the 1970s, this technology sought to enhance stereo sound by adding two additional audio channels, distributing sound across four speakers placed around the listener. The goal was to simulate a three-dimensional soundstage, immersing audiences in a richer, more dynamic auditory environment.
The story of quadraphonic sound begins with early experiments in spatial audio during the 1950s, but it gained prominence in the 1970s when multiple formats such as SQ, QS, Quadradisc and CD-4 were introduced. Notable albums like Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side Of The Moon” and “Wish You Were Here”, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, Black Sabbath “Paranoid” and several classical recordings were released in quadraphonic mixes, illustrating the potential for an enhanced listening experience.
Despite its technological promise, widespread adoption faced challenges due to competing standards, high costs, and the complexity of setup and ultimately faded by the and of the seventies.Nonetheless this format paved the way for multichannel audio technology that evolved from Dolby Surround to 5.1 to todays immersive formats like Atmos, Auro3d and Sony360.
We first came into contact with Quadraphony during the recording of our latest album at Luca Tacconi's Sotto il Mare Recording Studio, equipped with a perfectly working M.C.I. quadraphonic mixing console from the seventies. During those sessions we dedicated ourselves to the recording and mixing of two of the songs that would appear on the album Music From The Stratosphere, promising ourselves to investigate the quadraphonic sound more deeply.
We thus entered a sort of space-time tunnel that brought us back to an era in which music was in a phase of extensive experimentation both from a sound and technological point of view, understanding that quadraphony was much more widespread than we thought: we discovered that some of the albums that most influenced our musical taste (The Dark Side Of The Moon, Imagine, Machine Head, some Joni Mitchell albums) had a quadraphonic version, sometimes much superior to the stereo version.
At that point the die was cast and during the winter of 2025 we returned to Sotto il Mare Recording Studios to mix our latest album in quadraphonic version (available here: Music From The Stratosphere | IAA ).
